4 Ways to Stay Fit this Summer (that aren’t working out)
Looking to switch up your fitness routine this summer while soaking up the summer rays? One of the best parts of summer is that it inspires us to get out and move more. We step away from the couch and go outside and exercise without even trying. Here are four activities to add to your routine that can help work out your whole body without stepping foot in the gym.
Hiking
I’ve talked about my love of hiking in the past. Maybe it’s because I live in freezing cold Michigan where the outside is unbearable, grey, and dead 8 months out of the year, but when summer comes around all I want to do is be with nature and experience the colors and sounds. It’s an incredible way to unwind after a long day or week. Just pack lots of snacks, sunscreen, water, and a battery pack for your phone. If you aren’t familiar with the area you’re hiking in it’s also a good idea to do some research beforehand.

Kayaking
Kayaking is one of my favorite summer activities and I hardly get to do it. Since I have a small apartment and a mid-sized sedan it’s not plausible for me to have a kayak. But when I do get to kayak I’m a happy camper. It’s such a good workout for your arms and your abs. An hour of kayaking burns more calories than jogging and the best thing is that you don’t even feel like you’re working out. Being out on the water and feeling your kayak gliding along is honestly so therapeutic. This summer I dream of renting a house on a lake with a kayak for a week and going out with my coffee in the morning (not really within my budget right but a girl can dream right). Just be sure to wear a lifejacket, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Bring a waterproof case for your phone as well as check the weather before heading out.
Paddleboarding
Much like kayaking, paddleboarding is one of those workouts that is so relaxing that you don’t even feel like you’re working out. I tried stand-up paddleboarding for the first time last summer and while it seemed intimidating at first, it was surprisingly easy. Paddleboarding is a full-body workout. The balance it takes for you to stay on the board as well as propelling yourself forward works your quads, abs, shoulders, and knees. Paddling works your arms as well. The best part is when you need a break you can just sit on your board and enjoy the rays. My advice is similar to kayaking, but I suggest leaving your phone at home unless you have a good way to carry it on your person.
Golfing
Last summer I was dating someone who was really into golf and was teaching me how to golf. While I’m single this summer, I plan to continue learning how to golf because I really enjoyed it. There’s a fair amount of cardiovascular exercise with golf. Just be sure to forget the cart. Also, your golf swing works every muscle in your body! Golfing is a very social sport so you’ll just feel like you’re hanging out with your friends. Honestly, even mini-golf is more beneficial than a night in front of the TV.
