10 Cozy Hygge Ideas For The Best Fall Feels

Something about the colder months makes me want to do all the cozy things. One of my favorite parts of this time of year is indulging in a relaxing activity, whether it’s the cold air, rainy/snowy days, or the fact that the days are shorter. One thing I have gotten into these past few years is Hygge (pronounced “hyoo-guh”). Hygge is a Danish term for living in the moment and finding joy in the simplest things by nurturing yourself and others in coziness. Danish people are the happiest in the world; a large part of that is Hygge! Here are some ways to incorporate Hygge into your life this Fall.

Hygge Tip 1: Have a Soup Night

Soup is the perfect Hygge Meal

It’s soup season! Is there anything better on a cold, rainy night than a bowl of hot soup (bonus points if you have yummy bread)? Put some soup in the crockpot and have it ready for you when you get home from work or school. Want to have a girl’s night or a date night? Make it a competition where everyone makes a soup or chili and then vote on which one is best (you also get a ton of leftovers).

Something about fall screams candles. Turn off all the lights and light a few candles. I love to do this and do yoga or while I’m watching a movie. Bonus points if it’s a fall-scented candle. If you live in an apartment where you can’t have candles or you’re worried about open flames around your pet or child, get yourself some battery-operated candles or LED Strip lights for a similar effect.

As it gets colder, we reach for things that are warm and comforting. I mean is there anything better than a hot cup of tea or cider after being chilled outside? Pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa and curl up with a good book or movie. Having a cozy night in with the girls? Make Hot Toddys.

Hygge Tip 4: Go on a Color Tour or a Fall Hike

If you live somewhere where the leaves change colors, you’re probably no stranger to color tours. Look up the best places to go in your state for sightseeing and grab your friends or family. Sometimes you can find guided color tours or fall hikes, but you can also plan your own.

Hygge Tip 5: Buy Yourself Something Cozy

The colder months are the time when we reach for our favorite sweatshirt or blanket. As a Michigander, I am no stranger to having to wear a sweater or sweatshirt well into June. So I figure if I’m going to spend half my year freezing then I might as well treat myself to new cozy clothing throughout the cold months. Buy yourself a new blanket or a new sweatshirt/sweater and have a lazy day with them. You don’t have to spend an arm and leg either. There are tons of cozy sets on Amazon or Target. I’ve even recently seen a fleece blanket in the dollar section of Target.

Hygge Tip 6: Find a Fun Activity You Can Do Inside

Now that it’s colder and the days are getting shorter, we are spending more time indoors. Now is the perfect time to find a new hobby or activity you can do until spring. Want to learn how to knit? Try it this winter. Some other activities are puzzles, word searches or sudoku, or board games.

Baking is a great way to feel cozy. Want to make the perfect pie for Thanksgiving or Christmas? Start practicing now. Some great baking ideas are bread, muffins, anything pumpkin, or baked apples. It’s also a great way to spend time with friends, partners or kids.

Casseroles and Squash are interesting because they feel like comfort food, but you can make them full of healthy ingredients. They’re also incredibly easy to make because most of the time you just dump and bake them making them perfect for a weeknight dinner. Like a squash with stuffing? Consider making your own with toasted bread, veggie stock, celery, and spices.
