You Need to Add Hiking Into Your Wellness Routine 2021

Now that winter is behind us (well for the most part) I’ve been spending as much free time as I can going outside. Last year many of us found new hobbies during quarantine. I was no exception. After moving to my one-bedroom apartment, my yoga studio shutting down for good, and getting laid off from my job, I found myself frequently going spending most of my time on walking trails/hiking trails. I would spend hours (sometimes daily) out by the river, and exploring hidden trials. It was the only thing that kept me sane in the strangest and loneliest summer of my life. Although things have changed in the last year, hiking is going to be a permanent part of my life and wellness plan. Here are just a few reasons why you should do the same.

It’s Good Exercise

I consider hiking to be what I call hidden cardio. It’s a great way to get exercise while forgetting that you are getting exercise. If you just need a break from the gym, hiking is an incredible way to take switch it up.

It’s good for your mental health

Hiking reduces what is known as rumination also known as negative thought patterns. Last year I was going through what I would consider an existential crisis. Hiking helped me get out of my own head. Instead of sitting on the couch dwelling on what was wrong with my life, I would get out in nature and feel much more refreshed. Hiking also has been proven to reduce your blood pressure and cortisol levels.

It improves your sleep quality

Hiking improves sleep

Who doesn’t need better sleep? Hiking helps you use more energy than sitting on the couch. Studies show that hiking a particularly hilly terrain will help you expend up to 28% more energy than walking on flat ground. When you are hiking you are also avoiding stimuli like TV, phones, and computers that negatively affect sleep.

Hiking makes you a nicer person

Something about being out with nature can make you feel like one with the Earth cue Colors of the Wind. Many times I have returned from a hike with more patience and more compassion. I feel unlimited gratitude for this beautiful planet and everything it offers after a nice long hike.

It’s the perfect time to reflect

Hiking alone is the best time to think about life. Many of my days last summer hiking alone were spent reflecting on life and what I wanted out of it. If I’m feeling particularly stuck on a project, I go for a hike and feel much more clarity than before.

It’s a great way to bond

On the other hand, hiking is a great way to bond with loved ones. It’s a safe and unique way to spend time with your circle. It’s also a super cheap date night.
